ST. LOUIS - Dozens gathered for a vigil Saturday morning in north St. Louis in memory of homicide victims, supporting families who lost a loved one to violence. The 13th annual vigil of remembrance was held at the Saints Teresa and Bridget Catholic Church. It was hosted by the St. Louis Mayor's Office, Crime Victim Center and Homicide Ministers and Community Alliance. According to the CDC, the homicide rate in the state of Missouri is 14 per 100,000 people. That's the fourth-highest rate in the entire United States, behind only Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. One person was killed after a suspect opened fire on a street in South Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon.During a dispute, the suspect, only identified as a male, “produced a handgun and proceeded to murder the other,” said Los Angeles police.The suspect then attempted to carjack several vehicles in the Vermont Square neighborhood near Normandie Avenue and 49th Street, authorities said.He continued walking southbound on Normandie Avenue where he shot at a bystander. Two teenagers from Long Beach have been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a Los Angeles man that took place on Wednesday. The victim, identified by authorities as 25-year-old Luis Fernando Polita of Los Angeles, was stabbed to death aboard a Metro Blue Line train around 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon in the 100 block of East 1st Street. Detectives were able to determine that Polita boarded the Metro Rail outside of Long Beach, and that the male suspects entered the train sometime after it crossed into Long Beach. “During the assault, one of the suspects produced a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times which ultimately resulted in the victim’s death,” the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement.
